The Heating Season Problem: Why Warm-Air Systems Leave Dark Marks on Ceilings

Warm air without the tell-tale marks. See the Line diffuser range.

The heating has just gone back on across the country, and in millions of rooms an invisible process has started with it. By the time the clocks go forward again, a surprising number of ceilings will have developed a faint grey feathering around their air vents — soft sooty streaks that no one remembers being there in September. Decorators call it ghosting, and it is one of the most common complaints in rooms served by warm-air heating.

Where the marks come from

The mechanism has a name: thermophoresis. Warm air carries a constant freight of microscopic particles — dust, candle soot, cooking aerosols — and when that warm air meets a noticeably cooler surface, the particles migrate toward it and stick. The sharper the temperature difference, the crisper the deposit. A pressed-metal grille is the perfect accomplice: it conducts heat away quickly, so its frame sits colder than the plaster around it, and every winter evening it quietly prints its own outline onto the ceiling in grey. Static charge on metal and plastic faces makes the attraction stronger still.

The gypsum difference

A Ventmann Line diffuser is cast from a gypsum composite — thermally, it is practically the same material as the ceiling it sits in. There is no cold metal edge for the temperature step to form against and no static charge to gather dust, so there is no crisp halo; the ceiling ages evenly instead of developing a shadow around every outlet. And because the face is ordinary paintable plaster, a spring freshen-up is a roller pass, not a replacement part.

Heat pumps raise the stakes

This matters more now than it did a decade ago. Heat-pump and warm-air systems deliver lower-temperature air for longer hours, which means the terminals work nearly continuously through the season. Longer running hours reward outlets that spread air properly: a linear slot washes a wall or a run of glazing with a gentle, ceiling-hugging stream, while a Performance Circle diffuser mixes a whole room from a single point. Where airflow demands are higher, Performance Line diffusers move more air through the same discreet profile, fed evenly from acoustic plenum boxes.
