Air Conditioning Diffusers

Air conditioning diffusers are the terminals that take cooled air from your ductwork and spread it evenly across a room — so you feel comfort, not a cold draught blowing on one spot. Ventmann UK manufactures architectural AC supply and extract diffusers from a unique gypsum composite that plasters flush into the ceiling or wall. No bulky plastic grille, no condensation-streaked rim: just balanced air distribution and a finish that disappears into the architecture.

Whether you are cooling a boardroom, a retail unit, a restaurant or a high-end home, our diffusers deliver the throw and spread an AC system needs while keeping ceilings clean and quiet. Every model works with standard duct sizes, ships with next-day UK delivery, carries a 5-year warranty, and comes with free airflow calculations so the cooling is specified correctly. What is an air conditioning diffuser?

An air conditioning diffuser is the outlet where cooled, conditioned air leaves the ductwork and enters the room. Its job is to shape that air: to throw it far enough to reach the occupied zone, mix it with room air so there are no cold streams, and do it quietly. Without a diffuser, cooled air from an AC system would shoot out in a single concentrated jet — chilling the people directly beneath it while the rest of the room stays warm. The geometry of the diffuser (slot, round, square, or directional vane) decides how the air is spread.

Most commercial AC installations use standard plastic or steel grilles that sit proud of the ceiling, collect dust and can sweat with condensation on humid days. Ventmann takes the architectural approach: a gypsum, plaster-in diffuser skimmed flush into the ceiling, so all you see is a crisp slot, circle or square. It performs like a precision terminal and looks like part of the building.

Supply, extract and return — the whole room in one design

A well-balanced air conditioning system needs more than supply outlets. Ventmann diffusers handle both supply and extract/return air, so cooled air is delivered and warm room air is drawn back to the fan-coil or AHU through matching terminals — all sharing the same minimal appearance. Pairing a diffuser with an acoustic plenum box equalises pressure across the full face of the outlet, which keeps air velocity even, prevents dumping, and holds noise down — critical in offices, hospitality and bedrooms where a noisy AC terminal is quickly noticed.

Choosing the right AC diffuser: throw, spread and type

Selecting an air conditioning diffuser is about matching the air pattern to the room. Cooled air is denser than room air, so it drops — a diffuser must throw it far enough and mix it well enough that it reaches the occupied zone at a comfortable temperature and speed. Use this as a starting guide; send us the room sizes and cooling loads and we will specify every terminal for free.

Diffuser type Air pattern Best for
Linear / Performance Line Long, directional throw along a slot Open-plan offices, perimeter cooling, long rooms
Circle / Performance Circle Wide radial (360°) spread Square rooms, central ceiling positions, high mixing
Square Compact multi-directional spread Smaller rooms, grid ceilings, discreet cooling
Side Square / Side Round Horizontal sideways throw Walls, bulkheads, high-level cooling
Art Grille Low-velocity return / extract Return-air paths, large decorative extract

Duct sizes for air conditioning diffusers

AC diffusers connect to standard UK duct diameters. Pick the size that keeps face velocity low at your design flow rate — low velocity means quiet cooling with no draught. These are typical comfortable duties; for an exact AC schedule, send us your cooling loads.

Duct size Typical airflow Typical application
100 mm (4") up to ~20 l/s Small offices, treatment rooms, bedrooms
125 mm (5") ~20–35 l/s Meeting rooms, retail bays, cellular offices
150 mm (6") ~35–55 l/s Open-plan zones, restaurants, classrooms
160 mm ~40–60 l/s Larger open-plan, main branches
200 mm (8") ~60–100 l/s Large commercial spaces, high cooling loads

Linear diffusers are also sized by length and slot count (1, 2 or 3 slots), fed by acoustic plenum boxes with 75 mm, 125 mm or 160 mm connections.

Gypsum AC diffusers vs standard plastic & steel grilles

Standard AC grilles are adjustable and cheap — and that is the end of the list. Here is how an architectural plaster-in diffuser compares on what matters across the life of a building:

Ventmann plaster-in diffuser Standard AC grille / swirl diffuser
Ceiling finish ✓ Fully flush, frameless, invisible edges ✗ Bulky rim or frame sits proud of the ceiling
Condensation ✓ Gypsum body with thermo plenum resists sweating ✗ Bare metal can sweat and stain on humid days
Air distribution ✓ Plenum-fed, even throw, no dumping ✗ Can dump a cold jet onto occupants
Acoustics ✓ Acoustic plenum option cuts airflow noise ✗ Can whistle or roar at higher flow
Design value ✓ Specified by architects & interior designers ✗ Utility look; hidden in design renders
Paintability ✓ Sand and paint any colour to match the ceiling ✗ Fixed white/metal finish; discolours over time

Installing AC diffusers: the plaster-in process

Fitting a Ventmann diffuser is a straightforward first-fix / second-fix job any competent installer or dryliner can complete:

  1. Fix the plenum box above the ceiling and connect to the AC duct with the correct spigot. For chilled air, use a thermo (insulated) plenum and seal joints with foil tape to stop condensation.
  2. Cut the aperture in the plasterboard and offer the gypsum diffuser body up to the plenum so it sits flush with the board.
  3. Tape and skim the gypsum flange into the ceiling like any plasterboard joint. The composite absorbs water well, so joint plaster keys in and will not crack.
  4. Sand and paint with the rest of the ceiling — the diffuser disappears, leaving only the slot or aperture.
  5. Clip in the grille — metal grilles mount on industrial magnets, so they lift off in seconds for commissioning and cleaning, with no visible fixings.

Balancing & commissioning your AC terminals

Every AC system must be balanced so each zone gets its design flow and the cooling is even. With Ventmann diffusers, flow is set at the plenum or with in-slot magnetic airflow regulators that also steer air left or right to fine-tune throw. Because grilles lift off magnetically, taking anemometer readings or cleaning for the cooling season takes seconds without disturbing the plaster. Designing a new system? Air conditioning diffusers — FAQs

What is the difference between an AC diffuser and a grille?

A diffuser shapes and spreads cooled air in a defined pattern so it mixes evenly with the room; a grille is a simpler covering, often used for return or extract air. Ventmann diffusers plaster in flush and distribute supply air without dumping a cold jet, while our Art grilles suit decorative return-air paths.

Can the same diffuser be used for supply and return air?

Yes. Ventmann diffusers are suitable for both supply and extract/return duties, so supply and return terminals across a space can share the same flush, frameless appearance.

Do plaster-in AC diffusers cause condensation?

They are far less prone to it than bare metal grilles. Pair the diffuser with a thermo (insulated) plenum box and insulated ducting on chilled runs, and seal joints with foil tape, and condensation is controlled even on humid days.

How do I stop cold air dumping onto people below the diffuser?

Choose the right diffuser pattern for the room (linear for long throw, circle for wide spread), feed it from a plenum box so velocity is even across the face, and balance the flow. Send us the room and cooling load and we will size it to avoid dumping.

What duct sizes do AC diffusers connect to?

Standard UK sizes: 100 mm, 125 mm, 150 mm, 160 mm and 200 mm round duct, plus 75 mm connections on linear acoustic plenums. Flanges and reducers adapt between sizes.

Are the diffusers difficult to install?

No — they install like plasterboard. Fix the plenum, cut the aperture, skim the gypsum flange, sand and paint. The magnetic grille clips in with no visible fixings. Any dryliner or AC installer can fit them.

How fast is delivery and what warranty applies?
