Any Colour You Like: Colour-Drenching, Dark Ceilings and the Paintable Air Vent

The vent takes the colour; the room keeps the spell. Explore the Line collection.

Interiors have fallen back in love with colour. Colour-drenching — walls, woodwork and ceiling all wearing the same shade — has moved from stylists’ portfolios into ordinary living rooms, and the once-untouchable white ceiling is now as likely to be ochre, sage or a near-black blue. The effect works because it is total: one unbroken envelope of colour, no edges, no interruptions.

Which is exactly why the humble air vent has become the detail that breaks the spell. Grilles arrive in wipe-clean white or, for a premium and a lead time, one factory RAL. Painting metal on site rarely ends well: the paint bridges and clogs the fins, flakes off the first time the vanes are adjusted, and the frame still telegraphs its outline through the colour.

Made to be painted

Gypsum diffusers start from the opposite premise. A Ventmann Line diffuser is cast plaster: it ships expecting primer and paint, not resisting them. Once it is plastered in frameless and skimmed, the decorator simply rolls over it with the same emulsion as the ceiling — one pass, no masking a frame, no cutting in around a collar. Drench the room in a deep blue and the diffuser goes with it. Repaint in five years and it repaints too, as many times as the room changes its mind.

The black slot trick

There is one part you never paint: the throat. Line diffusers carry a black internal tray behind the slots, so whatever colour the ceiling wears, the opening itself reads as a crisp, dimensionless shadow line — the same visual device architects use for shadow gaps and recessed blinds. On a dark ceiling the slot all but vanishes; on a coloured one it looks deliberate rather than mechanical. Performance Circle diffusers pull the same trick in the round, and the patterned Art frameless grilles turn the painted vent into an ornament in its own right.

A note for the decorator

Paint after jointing and priming, use ordinary ceiling emulsion, and keep the slot clear — that is the whole method statement. Because gypsum does not sweat or gather static, the finish stays clean: no condensation rings creeping through the colour, no grey dust halo a season later.
