Ventilating for Sleep: Fresh Air in the Bedroom Without Noise or Draughts

Fresh air that never wakes anyone. See the Performance Circle range.

We spend a third of our lives in one room, with the door shut, breathing. By the small hours, a closed double bedroom can carry several times the carbon dioxide of the living room downstairs — and it shows the next morning as the grogginess no amount of coffee quite fixes. Sleep researchers keep finding the same thing: cooler, fresher bedroom air means deeper sleep. Which makes the bedroom the most important ventilation job in the house, and the least forgiving one.

Least forgiving, because the bedroom is where every ventilation sin is audible. A hum that disappears into daytime life is a torment at 3 a.m. A draught you would never notice standing up lands directly on a sleeping face. And the terminal itself sits in the one ceiling people actually lie beneath and stare at.

Quiet is a system property

No terminal can silence a badly planned duct run, so the quiet bedroom starts behind the plaster: generously sized ducting to keep air speeds low, acoustic flexible ducting to stop the fan being heard down the run — and to stop one bedroom eavesdropping on the next through the ductwork — and acoustic plenum boxes to settle the airflow before it reaches the room.

Air that arrives nowhere near the bed

The terminal’s job is to finish that work invisibly. A Performance Circle diffuser releases supply air radially along the ceiling — the Coanda effect again — so fresh air mixes high in the room and drifts down everywhere at once, rather than falling in a cold column over the duvet. Placed over the wardrobe run or by the door, it ventilates the whole room without once blowing on anyone. Where the layout suits a wall outlet instead — a stud wall backing onto a landing void, say — the Side Round diffusers do the same job horizontally, flush and frameless in the wall.

And nothing to stare at

Because the bodies are cast gypsum, plastered in and painted with the ceiling, the night-time view from the pillow is an unbroken plane with a pair of fine shadow lines. No yellowing plastic valve, no dust halo creeping outward by February — gypsum carries no static and no cold edge for dust to cling to — and nothing to rattle as the fan steps up.
