Not Just Ceilings: The Case for Wall-Mounted Air Diffusers

Flush in the wall, painted with it. See the Side diffusers.

Ask where an air terminal belongs and almost everyone points up. Ceilings get the attention, the products and the blog posts — this one included. But plenty of rooms simply do not offer a usable ceiling: a concrete soffit with no void, a loft room where every slope is a finished surface, a listed ceiling nobody is allowed to touch, or a renovation where dropping the whole lid 150 mm would ruin the proportions. The air still has to get in somewhere. The somewhere is the wall.

The wall was always an option

Walls are often the easier route: stud partitions with ready-made voids, service walls behind joinery, the boxed-in chimney breast, the bulkhead above a run of wardrobes. A duct dropped vertically through a partition costs no headroom at all. The reason wall outlets feel like a compromise is not the physics — it is that the standard product is a louvred metal grille with a frame, and it looks like something borrowed from a plant room.

Flush, frameless, horizontal

The Side Square and Side Round diffusers apply the plaster-in idea to the vertical plane: a cast gypsum body set flush into the wall, skimmed, and painted with it, leaving a crisp square or circular relief instead of a grille. Spigots from 100 to 250 mm connect straight to the duct in the void, and the faces handle supply or extract. On a long white wall they read as a quiet architectural detail — closer to a recessed light than to ventilation equipment.

Getting the throw right

A wall outlet throws air across the room rather than down into it, which is exactly what you want: the stream hugs the ceiling plane, mixes high, and never lands on anyone’s neck. Mount it high on the wall, give it a clear run, and let the Line diffusers take over where a continuous horizontal slot suits the elevation better — above a run of glazing or along a bulkhead fascia. For a wall that deserves ornament rather than invisibility, the patterned Art frameless grilles make the outlet a deliberate feature.
